Gyrocompass Guide: Keeping Heading Accuracy on Long Voyages

10 Min Read  •  Navigation Equipment
Gyrocompass unit installed on ship bridge

Unlike a magnetic compass, a gyrocompass finds true north rather than magnetic north, and it does this without being affected by the ship's own steel hull or nearby electrical equipment. That makes it the primary heading reference on virtually every merchant vessel, tanker and offshore platform — everything from autopilot to radar overlay to ECDIS depends on the heading data it feeds out. When it drifts or fails, the knock-on effect touches almost every other system on the bridge.

How a Gyrocompass Finds True North

A gyrocompass uses a fast-spinning rotor combined with the Earth's rotation to settle on true north, independent of magnetic interference. This settling process takes time after start-up — typically a few hours depending on the unit and the vessel's latitude — which is why it's switched on well before departure rather than at the last minute.

Repeaters and Signal Distribution

The master gyrocompass unit distributes heading data to repeaters positioned around the bridge, bridge wings and steering stations, plus digital feeds to radar, ECDIS, autopilot and the voyage data recorder. When ordering a replacement or a new installation, count every repeater and connected system in advance — undersizing the distribution unit is a common and costly oversight.

Signs a Gyrocompass Needs Attention

  • Slow or inconsistent settling after start-up compared to normal behaviour
  • Persistent heading discrepancy against GPS course-over-ground on a steady heading
  • Repeater disagreement — different stations showing different headings
  • Unusual noise or vibration from the master compass housing
Latitude and speed error corrections are built into most modern gyrocompasses automatically, but on older units this correction may need to be set manually — worth checking during any handover or crew change.

Fibre-Optic and Ring Laser Alternatives

Newer vessels increasingly use fibre-optic or ring laser gyro (RLG) heading sensors instead of a traditional spinning-mass gyrocompass. These have no moving parts, settle faster and need less routine maintenance, though they typically cost more upfront. For vessels with tight maintenance windows or limited access to skilled technicians in port, the lower long-term maintenance load often justifies the higher initial cost.

Choosing the Right Unit

Selection mostly comes down to vessel size, the number of connected systems that need heading data, and how much downtime the vessel can tolerate if the compass needs servicing. Confirm the output format (analogue step, synchro, or digital NMEA/serial) matches your existing ECDIS and autopilot before ordering — this single detail causes more installation delays than any other spec.

Gyro Repeaters: Models & Brands We Supply

Repeaters are ordered separately from the master compass far more often than people expect — a repeater failure on the bridge wing or steering station doesn't always mean the master gyrocompass itself is at fault. Nautical Marine Services supplies repeaters across these brands on the same order basis as the master compass units — see our full gyrocompass range.

Digital Tape Repeater – DTR600Digital tape-style heading display providing clear heading indication on the bridge

Raytheon Anschütz Repeaters

Type 133-555 – Steering Repeater CompassSteering repeater used with older Standard 20 gyrocompass systems, providing accurate heading information at the helm

Tokimec & Yokogawa Repeaters

Both brands use step-motor type repeaters (typically 24VDC) wired directly to circuits on the master compass or control unit — the TG-series supports up to 8–9 repeater connections depending on model, with optional extension boards where more repeater points are needed than the standard configuration allows.

If you're not sure which model your vessel is currently running, a photo of the master compass nameplate and control box is usually enough for us to confirm the exact series and current availability. Nautical Marine Services works on an order basis — once the model is confirmed, we arrange delivery to match your vessel's schedule rather than holding fixed stock. Frequently Asked Questions – Gyrocompass Models

What is the Sperry MK 37 gyrocompass specification?

The MK 37 is Sperry's standard commercial gyrocompass, available in MOD-I, MOD-O, MOD-D/E and digital VT variants. Contact us for the full specification sheet, current price and lead time.

Where can I buy a Sperry MK 37 VT gyrocompass or spare parts?

We supply the MK 37 VT and its spare parts, including the gyrosphere, to order. Send us your vessel type to confirm current availability and price.

What is the current Tokimec TG-5000 price?

Pricing depends on configuration and repeater count. Send us your vessel details for an accurate quote on the TG-5000 or TG-6000.

Is the Anschütz Standard 22 NX still available as a replacement unit?

Yes — the Standard 22 NX is widely fitted across the world fleet, and we regularly supply replacement units and spares for it.

What is the difference between Anschütz Standard 22 and Standard 30 MF?

The Standard 22 is a traditional spinning-mass gyrocompass, while the Standard 30 MF uses maintenance-free HRG technology with no moving parts. We can confirm which fits your vessel's maintenance budget.

Does the Furuno SCX-20 replace a traditional gyrocompass?

Yes — the SCX-20 is a compass that derives heading from GNSS antennas rather than a spinning mass, and is increasingly fitted as the primary heading reference on newer vessels.

How do I identify which gyro repeater model my vessel needs?

Repeaters are usually identified by the master compass brand and a type/part number on the repeater nameplate — for example Sperry's Type 4891 or 4881 series, or Anschütz's Type 133 series. A photo of the nameplate is usually enough for us to confirm the exact unit.

Quick Checklist Before You Order

  • Count all connected repeaters and downstream systems
  • Confirm output format matches existing ECDIS/autopilot
  • Decide between traditional spinning-mass and fibre-optic/RLG based on maintenance tolerance
  • Check settling time specification against your typical port turnaround

Once you've confirmed your specification, Nautical Marine Services can check availability from our gyrocompass and repeater range and arrange delivery to your vessel's next port of call.
